When you travel with a low cost airline it’s likely that you’ll only be given the option to bring one small item of hand luggage. However, if you’re booking a cheaper flight it’s probable that you don’t have the extra money to spend on upgrading your luggage allowance, so how do you get around this issue?

Here, we share our tips for packing hand luggage which we hope will help you to save money when you head to your next dream destination.

Roll everything

The number one tip for packing hand luggage is to roll everything that can be rolled. It’s far easier to pack rolled clothes into a bag than to try to keep them beautifully folded, and this will enable you to fill in all the gaps that your bag has to offer. It might be worth checking with your accommodation to see if they have an iron that you’ll be able to use when you get there, but rolling usually keeps clothes from getting creased anyway.

Buy toiletries at the airport

Even though you’re only allowed to take small 100ml toiletries onto the plane, these can still take up a bit of space, especially if you want to travel with make-up items. One tip for overcoming this obstacle is to buy your toiletries in the airport, as most airlines will allow you to bring a Duty Free bag on board in addition to your hand luggage. If you’re travelling with other people, save more money by purchasing products that you’ll all use, as you won’t be able to bring them home with you.

Be picky

When we have a big bag we will fill it, regardless of whether we need everything we’ve packed or not. With this in mind, think carefully about what you’re packing and if you could easily get through your holiday without it. Sure, it might be nice to have a new outfit for each day, but your precious carry-on bag space might struggle, so picking a few key pieces that can be mixed and matched might be a better option.
